Molly and Riley threw the kind of wedding that stops you in your tracks in the best way. Set against the backdrop of the Record Box Loft, this Battle Creek wedding was equal parts retro prom and cowboy western. Between their eclectic style and a venue equally as cool as they are, their wedding was one of the most unique I’ve ever captured. From thrifted outfits to DIY decor and a whole lot of personality, these two created a celebration that felt uniquely them from start to finish.
The Record Box Loft is one of Southwest Michigan’s hidden gems. Located right in the heart of downtown Battle Creek, this elevated industrial venue brings all the moody brick walls, exposed beams, and historic charm you could want. However, what really sets it apart is how thoughtfully functional it is for couples. With dedicated getting-ready suites, a cool cocktail hour space, and great photo locations within the building, there’s zero need to hop around town. It keeps the day relaxed and lets you stay focused on what really matters: being in the moment. The venue team is super helpful and welcoming as well. They’re just as amazing as the space itself! For couples looking for a unique Battle Creek wedding venue that checks all the boxes (and then some), Record Box Loft delivers.
Let’s talk about the vibe. These two took their love for all things eclectic and ran with it! The theme was 70s prom meets western cowboy. Think thrifted velvet suits, a bridal gown from The Bride’s Project, and disco balls galore. Almost everything, from decor to attire, was secondhand or handmade, and it made every detail feel intentional and completely personal. The aesthetic of their day wasn’t the only unique thing about it, though. Instead of traditional wedding parties, Molly and Riley got ready together, savoring those quiet pre-ceremony moments. Their ceremony and reception were focused on enjoying each other and the company of their guests. It was clear this wasn’t just about getting great photos (although, of course, we did that too). It was about living every moment fully.
Fun fact: I may or may not have coached Molly and Riley through their dip kiss. They had been practicing for a while, and it’s not as easy as it looks! So, I stepped in and offered up some advice since their Western-themed wedding wasn’t my first rodeo. As a result, theirs may have been the best dip kiss I’ve ever captured. And that’s the thing: my job goes well beyond snapping photos as a Michigan wedding photographer. I’m also a wealth of knowledge when it comes to planning, and an officiant. I’m your certified veil-fixer & bustle wrangler. And yeah, your impromptu dip kiss instructor, too.
Molly and Riley’s day is proof that when everyone leans into the theme, the energy shifts. Guests were encouraged to dress in alignment with the color palette, and the result? Every photo looked cohesive and elevated. It’s a subtle detail that made a big visual impact. (And, honestly, it’s so much fun for the couple and the guests!) Every detail of this wedding was about freedom and individuality. They prioritized doing things the way they wanted & wore what felt like them. That’s the kind of energy I hope to see more of in 2025 and 2026! And a few more themed weddings wouldn’t hurt either, you know?
