Nontraditional weddings have always resonated so well with me. To me, eloping is everything. Intentionally choosing to make your wedding entirely about you and your partner? About the way you feel? That is something special, something to document. While your nontraditional elopement doesn’t require quite as much planning as a traditional wedding, there are still some things to think about ahead of time. As an elopement photographer based in Michigan, I’ve become somewhat of an expert in all the ins & outs of elopements. Since a lot of it isn’t common knowledge, I thought I would share what you really need to know before eloping in Michigan. Your elopement gets to be whatever you want, and this guide is designed to help you make it happen!
The requirements for eloping in Michigan are really pretty simple, but the legalities can feel super overwhelming. To put it simply: you need to obtain a marriage license, an officiant, 2 adult witnesses, and a place for your ceremony. I’ve got you covered with the specifics!
Rule #1: you must be at least 18 years old to apply for a marriage license in Michigan. Fees will vary from county to county as well, so be sure to check the county clerk’s site for more info. You can expect to pay anywhere from $20-$40, depending on the county and whether or not you’re a resident.
Michigan Residents: If you’re a resident of Michigan, you have to apply for a license in the county where you live (even if you’re getting married in another county) and one of you has to be present.
Non-Residents: If both of you are non-residents of Michigan, you apply in the county where the marriage will take place. At least one of you must appear in person to apply with required documents.
Note: There is typically a 3 day waiting period between when you apply and when you can pick up your marriage license. Once you pick it up, your license is valid for 33 days.
In other words, you have to have your ceremony within 33 days of picking up your marriage license.
One or both of you need to go in person to your county clerk’s office to pick up your marriage license. Either way you BOTH need to bring in identification & certified birth certificates. Accepted documents include:
For foreign-born individuals, all documents must be originals and translated into English by a certified translator, with the translator’s signature notarized by someone other than themselves.
After your ceremony, your officiant will need to return the completed marriage license to the County Clerk’s Office within 10 days.
Certified copies of the marriage license can be obtained for a fee. The first copy costs $24, with additional copies priced at $7 each.
An officiant must be ordained to conduct the ceremony. You can hire an officiant or have a friend or family member get ordained through the universal life church if that’s more your vibe.
You will need two adult witnesses to be there for your ceremony. As your photographer I can count as one. I can also help make arrangements for you if you’d like a no-witness ceremony. Your officiant does not count as a witness. They have their own spot to sign on your marriage certificate!
Before you land on a location for your Michigan elopement, ask yourselves a few questions:
Be sure you’ve gained clarity on WHY you’re eloping. This is a super important step so you don’t end up having a day you hate. Having your priorities straight makes it easier to make decisions as you’re searching for the perfect location! They all have something to offer and set them apart, so keep those priorities in mind.
When planning your elopement, it’s important to consider who you’re inviting and their needs. Will elderly family members be attending, or is it just the two of you? Accessibility for your guests should be taken into account, especially if you’re choosing a location that requires a bit of a trek. Additionally, think about any special activities you’d like to include. Whether it’s something simple like sharing a meal or cutting a cake, or something more adventurous like renting a classic car or jumping into Lake Michigan, these decisions will help guide your venue choice. Lastly, be sure to ask yourself if you’re open to getting dirty or messy. If you’re not up for that, you may want to avoid nature-filled locations like beaches or forests, where the terrain can get a bit more rugged.
When it comes to location, I love seeing people elope in wildly unconventional places. Go off queen! Don’t be afraid to get creative with choosing an out-of-the-box spot that is significant to the two of you because it’s YOUR day. Bars, restaurants, a tree where you carved your initials– they’re all fair game. However, if you want something a little more traditional, I’ve compiled a list of some of the coolest and most beautiful ceremony sites Michigan has to offer.
Crahen Valley Park is an absolutely stunning a hidden gem and usually not crowded at all! If you’re not big on the idea of a bunch of strangers watching you elope, this is the perfect spot for you! Plus, with all of its forest area, grassy knolls, and flower fields, there are endless spots for photos! No permit is required.
Prairie Wolf Park is another hidden gem! There are tons of big rolling hills & forests to create perfect backdrop for nature lovers!
This location is so far west, it’s practically Wisconsin, but it’s SO worth the drive! Porcupine Mountains are the closest thing we have here in Michigan to a true mountain, and this would be the perfect choice for an adventurous couple!
This West Michigan beach is easily accessible and the least busy beach– perfect for an intimate elopement! This lesser known option is a beautiful option for a couple seeking waterfront views for their ceremony.
Esch Beach is one of my absolute favorite beaches in the lower peninsula! It’s located near Sleeping Bear Dunes, but much more secluded! The clear water and dune views would make for the most beautiful photos.
Silver Lake Sand Dunes is such a unique combination. When you see it, it’s like being transported to the desert because of the dunes for miles, but with Lake Michigan! There are tons of activities in the area as well, so perfect for couples who want to plan a whole weekend.
Located near Traverse City, Mission Point Lighthouse can be found at the point of a peninsula!! There’s a rocky beach with an old lighthouse that you can go inside and get amazing views of the Grand Traverse Bay.
This unique beach is absolutely iconic to Marquette, MI/the UP! To be totally transparent: I got married here so I’m very biased, but it’s such a unique location! It has stunning rock formations, and the whole park (Presque Isle Park) is gorgeous!
Pictured Rocks is located in the Upper Peninsula and is one of Michigan’s only nationally protected lands. It includes 40 miles of lakeshore & every spot is breathtaking! Truly the only “cliffside” found in MI. Otherworldly!!
If you want to do it the easy way, you can’t go wrong with the Grand Rapids Courthouse. It’s located in the heart of downtown, so finding good photo spots, activities, or dinner couldn’t be simpler!
Located in downtown Detroit, Shinola is a hotel that holds large weddings, but the restaurant inside (San Morello) allows elopements! Perfect for those who want a luxury experience with a small amount of people! Plus, it’s right at the heart of Downtown Detroit, so pictures are no problem.
12. Michigan’s Capitol Building
Located in Lansing, the courthouse is directly across the street from the Capitol Building. In other words, you could do a courthouse elopement and then have photos at the Capitol! You could also hire an officiant and have your ceremony on the Capitol lawn!
This stunning glass house gives a fairy, whimsical feel. It’s perfect for couples wanting a large elopement or a micro-wedding up to 50 people!
Find a unique Airbnb to have a big sleepover with all your favorite people and get married on the property! This lighthouse Airbnb is especially stunning (and I’ve shot here)!
Don’t underestimate a backyard elopement! Again, I’m all for being unconventional and doing what you want on your day. This keeps things simple, and you could even do a pot-luck style bbq!
Every season in Michigan has its perks, and it’s really going to come down to personal preference along with what you want your day to look like. Here are some of my favorite things about each season:
Michigan is my favorite place to be in the fall! The colors are unmatched and you can easily get lost in the stunning beauty!! I eloped in the fall myself so I’m biased, but this would be my vote for the best time of year to elope in Michigan.
Winter can be anything in Michigan so being flexible is a MUST. Personally, I would opt for an indoor or downtown location so you don’t have to rely on getting snow!
Another toss up, it can be cold & snowing or warm & rainy so flexibility is important! Have a backup location or be okay rolling with the punches! I think rainy weddings are so fun!
You really can’t go wrong with summertime in Michigan! I’d head up north and choose a beach location to try to beat the heat!
Cherry Republic. Traverse City is known as the Cherry Capitol so visit their iconic store.
Hike to Pyramid Point Overlook. Get out in nature and hike to this sand dune overlook.
