Choosing a Michigan wedding venue is one of the biggest decisions couples make. It’s also one of the most overwhelming. The options can seem endless with various styles and price points to say the least.  Venue choice is important!  It should reflect your vibe, your values, and your vision for the day. And the truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all answer.  So, how do you narrow it down to the perfect place?  In this article, I cover all of the major considerations and questions you should be asking yourself.  Let’s walk through it together!

What Kind of Michigan Wedding Venue Feels Like You?

Before you start booking tours or requesting quotes, stop and ask yourself: What kind of wedding actually feels like us? Your venue should be a backdrop for your relationship’s story, not a stage set for someone else’s. I’ve said it before (and I’ll say it again and again) but I am all for breaking the mold when it comes to your wedding day. If you’re barn wedding people, touring ballrooms would be a waste of time, y’know? Michigan has virtually every style of venue imaginable, and I’ve included a few of them below!

Country Vibes/Vineyard Wedding Venues Michigan

Perfect for couples who want a romantic, scenic setting with natural elegance. Vineyards give you those golden hour glow photos, relaxed pacing, and tons of charm.

The Michigan Wedding Venue Checklist 

Once you narrow down the type of space that fits your style, it’s time to ask the practical questions. These often-overlooked details can make or break your wedding day experience. When it’s your first time planning a wedding, you don’t know what you don’t know. That’s where I come in! As a Michigan wedding photographer, I’ve seen various scenarios play out and I know which questions are the most important to consider.  Here are 10 items for your wedding venue checklist:

1. Wedding Lighting Michigan

Does the venue get good natural light at all times of day? Will you be okay with flash or artificial lighting if needed? Bonus if they offer ambient lighting like string lights or candles.

2. Decor

Your venue, in a way, creates your photos. Do you like the venue as-is, or will it need a full makeover to match your vision? Does the venue allow outside decor? Restrictions (like no open flames) can affect your design plan.

3. Photo Locations

Are there beautiful spots for portraits on site? Or will you need to factor in travel time for photos? This can seriously impact your timeline.  If it’s not a priority, that’s okay! But if you care about how your photos look, it’s important to think this through!

4. Michigan Wedding Vendor Flexibility

Do they allow outside vendors? Or are you locked into their preferred list? While it’s helpful to have a list of vendors they know in trust, it can also be limiting (especially where caterers are concerned!)

5. Room Flips

Do they have to do a room flip between the ceremony & reception? This means you won’t be able to use that space for a portion of the day. This may play into timeline/photo schedule. 

6. Ceremony Options

Do they offer more than one ceremony site? What’s the rain plan—and do you like it just as much as the original?

7. Getting Ready Spaces

Is there a bridal suite or space for getting ready? If not, that’s an extra location (and cost) to coordinate. An on-site bridal suite is so convenient and you don’t have to deal with the stress of traveling to get to the venue. 

8. Accessibility & Guest Comfort

Will the space work for all your guests, including those with mobility needs? Are you maxing out the guest list capacity? If yes, it will likely be pretty crowded – is that okay with you?

9. Seasonal Considerations

Touring in April for an October wedding? Ask for seasonal photos– a venue will look drastically different in the winter vs. summer. It’s important to make sure you have a good idea of what it will look like! Do they have a/c in the summer? Remember to ask!

10. Personal Fit

Does the venue feel like you? A couple who wants a backyard BBQ will likely feel out of place in a marble ballroom—and vice versa. Honor your style and make a decision based on what makes sense for the tow of you.

What is the best month to get married in Michigan?

Michigan is beautiful year-round, but each season brings its own considerations. The weather, lighting, foliage, and even vendor availability can dramatically impact your wedding day experience. Before you sign a contract with a venue or set your date in stone, there are a few more questions to ask yourself. Is your heart set on an outdoor summer wedding or are warm, autumnal colors calling your name? Do you want your ceremony outdoors or inside? As for your guest list, will many of them be traveling?

The season you choose will affect everything from your photos to your comfort level to your timeline. Here’s a quick look at what each season offers for Michigan weddings so you can decide which month to seal the deal:

Spring

Fresh blooms and budding trees make for romantic settings. But be prepared for unpredictable weather—have a solid Plan B. This is when it’s pertinent to have a conversation with your venue about alternative ceremony locations if you planned for an outdoor wedding.

Summer

Summertime in Michigan is a dream and that’s why it’s the most popular time to get married here. Long days, vibrant green backdrops, and outdoor reception options. But don’t forget: it can get hot, and many older venues don’t have A/C. At the same time, venues book quickly, so it’s important to plan ahead if you have your heart set on both the date and the venue.

Fall

Colorful leaves, cooler temps, and cozy vibes can make for a romantic atmosphere for fall nuptials. However, it’s also peak booking season, so if this is your dream, plan well in advance. Otherwise, you run the risk of being really disappointed or postponing your plans.

Winter

Magical, moody, and ideal for elopements or smaller weddings. Ambient candlelight and snowy bridal portraits can be whimsical and beautiful.  Bonus: more venue availability and better rates. Alternatively, if you have lots of out-of-town guests, inclement winter weather can also lead to flight delays or cancellations altogether.
